December 3rd, 2008 (Munich, Madrid, London, New York) – People in the US and Europe do love networking – especially in Internet. That’s pretty old news. Much more interesting is the fact, that there is a clear trend towards social networking with mobile phones in the mobile web.
One of the world’s most active pure mobile communities, itsmy.com (http://m.itsmy.com with your mobile phone), conducted a survey amongst 15,000 active users worldwide and discovered astonishing details about mobile social networking usage in US and Europe.
The survey shows that the mobile phone with mobile internet access is the perfect always on medium to enable people to stay in touch with friends and family and to share news and content. The participants stated that 95% (US) resp. 96% (UK) already use the mobile as main means of communication with their beloved ones. And 42% of them never used a (PC) online social network.
The survey:
1. Is the mobile community a part of your life?
2. How do you communicate with your closest friends or family the MOST?
3. What are you reading more frequently: Emails or community messages?
4. How different is the content: videos, pictures, messages... of your mobile phone compared to that on your computer/pc?
5. Are you able to use an online community on your computer at work, university?
6. How many times do you visit itsmy.com ?
7. What is your FAVORITE activity on itsmy?
8. How many Community Messages per day per user sent
9. Number of – friendship connections- per active user
10. How many really good friends do you have in itsmy?
11. Page views per active user/day
12. Does the current economic situation stop you from surfing mobile internet and spend money for mobile services?
13. Will you surf mobile communities more actively, if you have faster mobile internet access and a better mobile phone?
14. Internet usage in the future: How will you access internet?
No matter if they are from London or San Francisco: The average user is surfing astonishing 160 mobile internet pages per day. Heavy users log in up to 10 times a day with an online time of up to 2.5 hours to write and check their mails and personal messages, find out where their friends are and what they are doing at this very moment or upload latest pictures and videos to their personal mobile site.
99% of all respondents have personal content on their mobile phones. This fast growing worldwide phenomenon is valid for high class phone owners, like the ones with Nokia N95 and iPhones, as well as for people with low-priced starter models.
What all of them would like to have: reasonably priced flat rates, higher speed of network and faster phones with longer battery lives. Then more than 90% would increase their usage of mobile internet according to the survey.
Even the current economic situation does not stop most of them to use mobile internet, despite the still high prices: only 1/3 of all respondents tend to reduce their mobile internet time to save money.
Antonio Vince Staybl, CEO itsmy.com: “The mobile phone usage is “growing up” and changes communication with friends and family as well as the traditional internet usage dramatically.
Conventional entertainment and communication will become more personal and bigger than ever and come together on one digital media device.”
Sabine Irrgang, COO itsmy.com: “Almost 12% of the itsmy.com community members are still in bed when they check their personal messages for the first time. A mobile social networking portal is the place where you can reach and will meet people in future. The new, crowded Web 2.0 playground – stylish, digital and mobile.”
